New Food and Grocery Code of Conduct
A new voluntary Food and Grocery Code of Conduct is now available to better protect businesses that supply food and groceries to major retailers and wholesalers.
The Code was developed through close consultation with some major Australian food and grocery retailers as well as the Australian Food and Grocery Council.
What is in the new Code?
The voluntary Code:
requires retailers and wholesalers to act in 'good faith '
sets out the requirements for agreements between retailers or wholesalers and suppliers (for example, that agreements must be in writing)
limits when retailers or wholesalers can make changes to agreements with suppliers individually or once the agreement is in place
requires for any changes to agreements, plus reasons for the change, to be in writing
sets out a dispute resolution process.
Signing up to the Code
The Code is voluntary, and your business will need to sign up before it is applied to you. Once you have signed up, you will be bound by the Code when dealing with food and grocery suppliers.
If you're a supplier of food and groceries, you do not need to sign up. You will be covered by the Code when you're dealing with a retailer or wholesaler who has agreed to be bound by the Code.
